Who founded the Indian Society of Cardiology (ISC)

In 1996, Dr. R.K. Gokhroo, a visionary in Indian cardiology, identified a significant gap in heart healthcare. India is a vast and diverse country, but there’s an unequal distribution of specialists. Most patients suffering from heart issues are first seen by general physicians, not cardiologists. And many of these physicians lacked access to the latest cardiac advancements.

Dr. Gokhroo imagined something better:

  • A platform where young cardiologists could learn, connect, and grow
  • A bridge between leading experts and budding doctors
  • A commitment to keeping both cardiologists and physicians updated with evolving cardiac science

That dream took shape as the Indian Society of Cardiology (ISC).

Why the Indian Society of Cardiology Was Needed

India faces a growing burden of heart disease. Yet, most patients are still seen by non-specialists. This reality makes it even more important that both cardiologists and physicians are trained with the latest knowledge and skills.

From day one, ISC was meant to solve this. Its core mission has always been two-fold:

  • Equip young cardiologists with practical skills and modern tools
  • Ensure physicians across India can offer standard care, even outside metros

And all this while preserving the foundational values and basics of cardiology.

Editor, Indian Journal of Cardiology (Indexed)
FACC | Researcher | Educator | Innovator

Dr. R.K. Gokhroo is one of India’s most respected voices in the field of cardiology. As the President of the Indian Society of Cardiology and Editor of the Indian Journal of Cardiology, he stands at the forefront of advancing cardiovascular science, education, and care across the country.

With a distinguished academic career, Dr. Gokhroo served as Principal & Controller and continues as Senior Professor and Head of the Post Graduate Department of Cardiology at J.L.N. Medical College and Associated Group of Hospitals, Ajmer (India). His leadership in medical education has shaped generations of cardiologists.

Over his career, Dr. Gokhroo has authored and co-authored more than 300 research publications, with several landmark studies to his name. Notably, he led:

  • AJULAR Study (Ajmer ULnar ARtery Intervention Study)
  • SWIMI Study (Sweating In Myocardial Infarction Study)
  • And the innovative CALD CODE system – a mathematical model for describing coronary artery lesions during angiography.

Dr. Gokhroo is also a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC) and an active member of several national and international cardiovascular societies. His work bridges clinical excellence with research innovation, helping shape protocols, publications, and policy across the cardiology landscape.

He continues to be a guiding force in the Cardiological Society of India – Rajasthan Chapter, working tirelessly to promote heart health and evidence-based care at both regional and national levels.

What ISC Has Achieved Since 1996

Since its founding, ISC has steadily grown—not just in numbers, but in impact.

  • The Indian Journal of Cardiology, a peer-reviewed journal, has been in continuous publication since 1998
  • The Annual ISC Conference is held in India every September (since 2006), offering fresh learning for thousands of professionals
  • Membership has grown to nearly 1,000 members, including participants from across India and abroad
  • The society has become a recognized academic and clinical platform for heart specialists nationwide

National Arrhythmia Council (NAC)

In 2015, ISC took a bold step forward. With electrophysiology evolving rapidly, a decision was made to host a dedicated annual meeting: the National Arrhythmia Council (NAC).

  • NAC is a midterm conference held every June, focused on cardiac rhythm disorders
  • It helps young cardiologists stay updated on arrhythmia, ablation, pacemaker technologies, and more
  • Dr. Guruprasad, a DM in Electrophysiology from Chennai, was nominated as the organizing chairman

This initiative ensures that ISC continues to lead in subspecialty education, empowering doctors with practical tools for real-world challenges.
